July 4, 2019 Lake Charles, LA – 1 Dead, 1 Injured In Boating Accident In Calcasieu Ship Channel Lake Charles, LA (July 3, 2019) – Local authorities have recently released the identity of the man who died during a boating accident along the Calcasieu Ship Channel on Wednesday, July 3, 2019. Officials identified the victim as 34-year-old Joseph J. Bergeron, a resident of Sulphur. According to the initial police, Bergeron and another occupant (unidentified at this time) had been riding the 23-foot craft southbound along the Channel. At some time around 3:30 AM, the boat slammed into a dredge pipe in the vicinity of Hackberry, and the resulting impact ejected Bergeron. In an interview, a local guide claimed the crash occurred due to poor-quality lighting along the channel. Authorities have confirmed the second person in the boat sustained non-life-threatening injuries. After the crash, emergency personnel transported this individual to the West Calcasieu Cameron Hospital for further monitoring.
