Hammond, LA – Deadly Crash Involving A Horse On LA-1040 Near Baker Ln

Hammond, LA (May 31, 2019) – A twenty-one-year-old man was killed after a colliding with a horse on the highway.  The wreck took place on Sunday, May 26th at approximately 2:50 a.m.

Authorities indicated that the wreck involved a single driver who collided with a horse that had walked out onto the roadway. The driver, 21-year-old Javonte Lamone Johnson, was operating a 2011 Ford Fiesta while traveling east on LA-1040, also known as Old Baton Rouge Hwy.

The horse ventured onto the highway, causing the driver to turn and swerve in order to avoid it. The car struck the horse, and the vehicle overturned.  Johnson was ejected from the vehicle in the crash and died as a result of the injuries he sustained.

The owner of the horse has not been identified at this time. The wreck is still under investigation.
