July 24, 2015 Distracted Driving According to the Centers for Disease Control, motor vehicle crashes are one of the top two causes of death in the U.S. Distracted driving has joined alcohol and speeding as leading factors in fatal and serious injury crashes. In it’s recent white paper on the subject, “Understanding the Distracted Brain”, the National Safety Council examines why even hand-free cell phone use is an ever-escalating danger on our roads. Significantly, all of the NSC studies on the issue indicate that hands-free driving offers no safety benefits to drivers. Inattention blindness, slower response and reaction time and problems staying in lane are caused by hands-free cell use and will increase the risk of accidents. Prevention strategies, including consistent enforcement of laws prohibiting cell use while driving, are key to reduction of these risks. We can all do our part to make the roads safer for everyone. Don’t call anyone we know is driving. Let others know that we will not answer calls while driving. Disabling hands free technologies in our vehicles. Or simply put away the phone while driving.
