The accident happened along US Highway 90 near Delmar Rd in St. Mary Parish yesterday, Thursday, July 11th. Based on the initial police report, 88-year-old Claudia Dugas, of Morgan City, was driving a 2009 Chevrolet Cobalt as she entered the US-90 freeway. At the same time, 54-year-old Oscar Gonzalez, of Houston, Texas, was driving a 1994 Kenworth semi-truck in the westbound lanes of US-90. Dugas exited a parking lot and was struck by the 18-wheeler. The massive truck plowed into the Chevy Cobalt, causing Dugas to sustain life-threatening injuries. Authorities confirmed that Dugas was wearing her seatbelt at the time of the wreck. She was transported to Lafayette General Hospital for treatment immediately after the accident. Sadly, Dugas did not survive her injuries and passed away on July 12th. Police have confirmed that Gonzalez was wearing his seatbelt and did not sustain injuries. At this time, investigators do not believe that alcohol was a factor in this incident. We would like to extend our deepest condolences to the family of Claudia Dugas during this difficult time. Our thoughts are with them.
