May 9, 2013 4 Year Old Injured When Struck By Car in Watson Neighborhood A 4-year-old boy who was struck by a vehicle Sunday afternoon was transported via helicopter to Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center in Baton Rouge with non life-threatening injuries, police said. Walker police spokesman Capt. John Sharp said the child was in the roadway in Jim Tilley Street at 12:40 p.m. when a woman turned around the corner from Travis Street and could not stop in time. "From what we know right now, it just looks an unavoidable accident,” Sharp said. Sharp could not give details of the boy’s injuries because he is a minor. The driver was not cited, but the investigation is ongoing, Sharp said. No witnesses were present, Sharp said. While police tentatively characterize this as an unavoidable accident, it is important to note that Tilley Street is a very short residential street. It also has a 90 degree turn midway up the street and stop signs at both ends. In short, it is a street where any driver should exercise a high level of caution and awareness. It is an area where children can be expected to be near or on the roadway. It is also a street where a very slow speed is necessary for safety.
