A Birmingham police officer was taken to the hospital with back pain following an accident Thursday with an 18-wheeler, Sgt. Johnny Williams confirmed.

The crash occurred on Interstate 20 West around 1 p.m. shortly after the officer had wrapped up a traffic stop. The officer was transported to the hospital for observation after complaining of back pain.

The driver of the truck was not injured in the accident. An investigation remains ongoing.
