May 31, 2014 Fifth Person Dies from Louisiana Car Wreck A fifth person has died of injuries suffered in a head-on collision Friday in Acadia Parish, State Police said Saturday. Also Saturday, State Police identified two other people who died in the wreck as a mother and son. They are Laura Bartram, 44, and her 23-year-old son, Justin, both of Opelousas, Hammons said in a news release. The Bartrams were in a 2005 Honda Civic driven by Jacob Courville, 22, of Eunice, when the wreck happened about 2:30 p.m. Friday, just south of Eunice, State Police have said. The Honda was headed north on La. 13 when it crossed the highway’s center line for reasons that are still under investigation. It collided with a southbound 2002 Chevrolet Tahoe, State Police said. Courville was wearing a seat belt, but the Bartrams were not. A passenger in the Chevrolet who was not wearing a seat belt, Jamie Prejean, 29, of Mamou, was pronounced dead at the scene, Hammons has said. This tragic car wreck clearly shows the value of wearing seat belts. Three of the five dead were not wearing a seat belt a the time of the accident. The only person to escape this horrific car wreck with his life was wearing a seat belt. However, the failure to wear a seat belt does not prevent the surviving family of the passengers from bring a legal claim against any negligent party (although it may limit recovery).
